and we have a gorgeous 22 month old - who loves to run and play and help me in the kitchen.

and we have another little girl due This coming September (and yes, I am looking for guest posters that month - mid- end... )

Most of my crafting is related to my girl (and soon to be girls). My blogging follows no schedule currently because the only schedule I keep is breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, snack, supper, snack, and snack again a time or two. (can you tell I'm pregnant? lol)
I have a few patterns up on my blog for free under the tutorials tab

I love to sew my kid clothing and pink is my favourite colour.

We Love Handmade: Joanne Poore of Vintage Rose Shop

Handmade is heartmade. And that's what I love most about Etsy. In Etsy, there are lots of talented artists who could inspire you and "wow" you with their art! One of these talents is Joanne Poore, the artist behind the lovely handmade jewellery shop, Vintage Rose.

Ladies and gentlemen, meet the talent behind the art - the lovely Joanne Poore.

Joanne Poore, artist and owner of Vintage Rose Shop

When I asked Joanne for a photo so everybody can put a face to the name, I actually didn't expect nor realize that she's the same person modelling her own handmade items! Creator, designer, producer and model! How's that for an artist?

Joanne, modelling one of her lovely items

We did an interview with Joanne and we are excited to share it with you. I always find it a delight to get to a little bit more the hands and the mind behind the lovely handmade items I admire. Getting an insight on how the artist think, what inspires her and how she creates her lovely items makes me feel how she feels about her creations, too.

Enjoy the interview!

Me: Hi, Joanne! Could you tell us how and when did you start your shop?

Joanne: I opened my Etsy jewellery shop on July the 4th last year, so it's coming up to being one year old now. I live in Cornwall, in the UK,
and Etsy is not so well known here as it is in the States, but the
minute I discovered it I just knew I wanted to open up a shop there. I
loved the whole look of the site as well as the large community of
inspiring artists.

I started out my own career as an artist, painting
nature, flowers, seas, skies, etc, but my passion for colour, shape
and texture has always spilled over into the realm of jewellery making
too. Although I've been making jewellery for many years, selling it
online is a fairly new venture for me.

Me: What is your shop's aesthetics philosophy?

Joanne: I aspire to be unique and original, creating every piece to the best of my abilities. Each piece is made to exactly how I would like it to be, if I were to buy it myself. Each little piece and part of the
design has to look and feel right or I don't believe that I have
created to the the best of my ability. For me it's all about creating
my own version of 'beauty' and sharing it, about being true to myself
and my own vision.

At the end of my life, I'd be very happy to think
that I may have inspired another to see and sense the beauty that
exists around us, because although the world can be a harsh place
sometimes, there are also miracles of beauty and wonder out there too.
These little miracles of beauty can nurture our soul and give meaning
to our existence, making life feel a whole lot more fulfilling and

Me: What is it that sets your shop and your handicraft apart from all
the other handmade shops?

Joanne: I think perhaps one of the main things that sets my shop apart is my approach to creating jewellery with an artists eye. The way, for
example, that I use and blend colours. I tend to lean more towards
harmonious colour as opposed to, say, complimentary colour. I think I
probably have a 'colour signature' that is quite recognizable. I also
use texture quite extensively to create subtle detailing.  I think my
long career in art has greatly informed my understanding of colour,
texture and form, and how to translate these elements in jewellery
design. I find jewellery to be a perfect compliment to my prior years
as an artist, for I see jewellery not only as adornment, but as art
for the body. With each piece I make, I find myself considering how it
will hang, it's length, weight, and the way it moves, even who may end
up wearing it - for all these aspects, added together, become the
essence, the soul, of the piece.

Feather Necklace by Joanne Poore

I think another aspect of my work that may be different is the
Bohemian styling, not the usual boho 'hippie chic' look, but more of a
modern, fresh and contemporary look. Perhaps it's Bohemian Chic meets
City Chic?! I'd like to think that the woman who loves nature and
lives in the countryside, feeding the birds and tending the garden,
would be as happy wearing my jewellery as the art lover who lives in
the busy city and enjoys fashion, music and culture.

Me: Where do you get the inspiration to create?

Joanne: I think the inspiration to create is quite a mysterious thing, one that perhaps comes from deep within. But there are so many things that fan the flames of inspiration for me; mainly nature and the world
around me. I live by the sea and walk in nature everyday, soaking up
the atmosphere, the colours and the light. My surroundings always seem
to find their way into my creative expressions somehow.

Flowers especially, with their fragile forms in a rainbow of colours, are a major source of inspiration. Art, colour, culture,  fashion and
interiors are big inspirations too. You can see more regarding how my designs come to fruition by visiting my blog, which I use as my visual diary to document my ideas and inspirations. (Check her blog here)

Mosaic Ring

Me: How does your creative process start? Is it like a Eureka
experience or is it more of a meditative experience?
Joanne: It can definitely be either, though it is usually more of a meditative experience. My studio is like a 3-dimensional sketchbook where my ideas are scattered about for future reference - little piles and
collections of beads, fabrics, paint swatches; this and that, here and
there - all sorts of items gathered together because they inspired or
intrigued in some way.

Chunky Yellow Necklace with Turquoise

I'll start creating something by surveying these little collections and seeing which one I'm drawn to working with on the day.  However, if I've sat at my desk, after having a 'Eureka' moment and know exactly what I want to create, then I'll begin by gathering the bits and pieces that feel right for the project. This can be one of the most enjoyable parts of the whole creative process for me - collecting, gathering and assembling. It's a very organic process and I often change direction, but that's all part of the fun!

Agate Druzy Necklace

Me: Where else can we find your handmade items aside from your online
shop? do you also sell locally?

Joanne: At the moment, the only place you can find my jewellery is in my Etsy shopI have sold at craft fairs, shops and galleries in the past, but just now I'm enjoying the
simplicity of having it all in one place.

Behind the studio shot

Me: Where do you see your shop and yourself as an artist a few years
from now?

Joanne: As long as I'm creating things that I love, and feeling inspired and motivated, I'll be very happy. One of the main things that I've learnt during my life, so far, is to allow myself room to grow - naturally and organically. Sometimes, no matter how much you may plan or
envision, you just can't predict how life will unfold for you. I used
to have very specific ideas about how I wanted everything to be, but I
found that my ideas often clashed with reality!

Often, when painting, I would try to make the painting become the vision that I had in my mind, but it wouldn't always oblige, and I'd end up fighting with my canvas, trying to force it to become something it was never meant to be! That wasn't much fun so I soon learnt to let go! My best and most enjoyable painting experiences were when I surrendered to the creative process and allowed it all to happen. I've found this applies not only to the creative process, but to life in general too. Just like that saying: "How do you make God laugh? Tell him your plans!"

Lampwork Pendant Ribbon Necklace

Me: Any piece of advice that you can give to aspiring artists who would
also like to convert their talent and skill into a form of income?

Joanne: Well, I think one thing I would have to say is that, as far as I can see, there is no great 'secret to success' out there, regardless of
what some say. I think that each and every person has their 'own'
secret to their 'own' success, which, through the process of their
individual journey through life, can be discovered and unlocked. I
really don't think there's a formula that everyone can follow to
achieve the same results - we are all too unique for that to work.

If I were to give any advice, it would be this: Do what you love,
because if you don't love it you wont have the motivation to keep
going during the tougher times. Also, don't be afraid to change -
either yourself, your attitude, your beliefs, your direction or your
business. It can be very difficult to know when to stick with
something and when to let go. Sometimes we make decisions that, five
years later, just don't suit us any more. So I think it can be very
helpful to review your goals and beliefs periodically, because they
may not be serving you any longer (speaking from personal experience
here of course!).

Behind the studio

I think the most valuable advice that I can give would be to get to
know yourself and what you want from your passage through life,
because it's your journey and no one else knows your destination, so
how can they possibly tell you what to do or how to get there!
Everything that you need is within you, and I think that your
relationship to yourself is what determines your experience in life.
Life is mysterious and, frankly, unfathomable. so just enjoy it as
best you can, and go for it regarding making a living from something
you love!

Thanks for this interview, Joanne!
