Good morning, lovelies! I hope you are all having a nice day! I, on the other hand, had been suffering from a very bad migraine episode for three days now. I predict that this attack would last for 5 days : ( I really am having a very lousy month. After catching the flu, this bad migraine episode. I am left with no energy for some creativity. But I am positive. Better days will come... soon! We are also suffering a drastic descend in our temperature here in Mallorca.

Ladies, meet Jana and her little helper!

Jana will share with us a little about herself, her blog, her shop, and her creative process. It is always great to know the person behind each item and behind each post, right? So, we asked Jana some questions:

Tell us a bit about yourself.

 My name is Jana and I’m the artist behind Helmitarha. I grew up in Latvia, but at the moment I live in Kotka (Finland) – beautiful city by the Baltic sea.

As long as I remember myself I’ve always tried to make or do something creative. I’ve played in local theatre, took piano lessons, tried doll making, silk painting, knitting and crocheting and even wood-burning. First time I picked up seed beads, when I was around 12. My mom’s friend gave me her old sweater, which had a huge bead embroidered flowers in the front and told me to cut it apart. I spent a week carefully cutting the beads off the fluffy sweater and in the end I made my first beaded bracelet, and I still have it. : )

After moving to Finland in 2008 I decided to start beading again, as I had an urgent need to fill my free time with some fun activities. It took me a while to remember all the basic techniques that I learned as a child and when I finally got the courage to make more complex pieces, I just couldn’t stop. I successfully sold couple of my first necklaces and that’s when I decided to take it to the next level, and Helmitarha was born.

Tell us a bit about your shop/blog.

Helmitarha is rather young Etsy shop that will celebrate one year birthday in the beginning of March. 


All items in the store are hand-crafted by me using a variety of natural materials like semi-precious and precious stones, pearls, shells and feathers in combination with tiny glass seed beads. Most of the items that you see in the store are one-of-a-kind. 


I try to make jewelry in different styles and wide price range, as my target group includes all kinds of wonderful, smart and beautiful women (and sometimes men) of age 20-60+. It’s really amazing to know that my jewelry doesn’t have age limits and every lady can find something to suit her taste.

What else do you do, aside from your etsy shop?

Besides running my Etsy store I work in a small property management company. It’s fun and very challenging job that doesn’t let me relax even for a moment.

I also work a lot with custom orders and I enjoy it every time, when interesting people approach me with their ideas and visions of a perfect jewelry piece.

In my free time I like to cook, play with our little dog, grow crazy amount of saint-paulias on the kitchen table, go flea market shopping, crochet large tablecloths, collect vintage thimbles and just enjoy every day of life.

Where do you see yourself, let’s say… 10 years from now? 

10 years is a really long time and usually I don’t like to plan things so far ahead. But I definitely can see myself having my own studio and still enjoying bead embroidery. Actually, I would love to make it my main work.
